In and around Hervey Bay

On Sunday, we took a drive out from Hervey Bay to check out a few small towns that lay around the area.

The first town we came to was Toogoom, which is a small fishing town with a nice little beach and a small cafe selling homemade cakes and other local produce.  After a drink there, we drove along to Burrum Heads, which was even smaller than Toogoom, sporting just a small row of shops by the coast.  There was not much to speak of here, apart from a small group of kangaroos that were lazing about under a tree on the way into town.

Our final visit of the day was Childers, the largest of the towns we visited today and sported a lot of old style buildings, much like we saw in Bundaberg, except that Childers seems to have escaped encroachment from more modern buildings.

Returning to Hervey Bay that evening, we again met with Selina's friend at Hervey Bay Boat Club - a large entertainment complex with a few bars, a bookies and gambling machine room and two restaurants, all situated alongside Hervey Bay marina.  The weather by now had improved to more blue sky than cloud, and we were able to enjoy a fish and chip supper outside, watching the comings and goings at the marina.

On Monday, as this would be our final day in Hervey Bay and with clear blue skies, we decided to have a bit if a beach day and have some relaxation before hitting the road again on Tuesday.

We both had a swim in the sea and had some tanning time, before popping into the nearby beachside cafe for some cool drinks.

We also took a walk along Urangan pier, which was built to allow the local produce of sugar cane and coal to be loaded onto ships waiting offshore via a light railway running the length of the pier.

The pier used to run nearly 1.5km out into the sea.  However since the pier was decommissioned in the 1980's, it has been partially dismantled and is now only about 800m in length.

After our walk to the end of the pier and back, we retreated to the cool shade of our motel room and got ready for our final evening meal in Hervey Bay.

Our next stop as we start to move back south will be Coolum Beach.
